Back in High School my classmates called me The Dronemaster since my hotrod was outfitted with chamber style exhaust mufflers that made such terrible racket. The high compression 327 V-8 sounded nice and choppy idling around the parking lot but on the road at cruise speeds the big diameter pipes would get to resonating very badly. The speed limit of 55 mph would place that hi-perf small block at just above idle around 2k rpm which introduced a deafening drone resonating up through the floorboards. The kids loved it but not many would partake in a lengthly ride-along… hence the nickname I got assigned with. Folks with OverDrive transmissions got it worse as the reverberation would attack harder due to lugging of the engine at road speeds. Those were some teeth-rattling rides back then.

The exhaust flowpath within a chamber style muffler is super treacherous! To flow around the angle wing the exhaust gas splits and takes a 180 degree turn on the left half plus a 180 degree turn on the right side. The collision of both sides brings the deep bass boom tone but also beats the heart of the drone. In this case, the solution is fabrication of a pipe column mounted in the area where resonance begins. At the heart of the matter, the pipe column is welded in place to facilitate a more gentle path which greatly reduces any droning resonance effects.
